Fri Fotos: Up in the Air

I have a few favorite travel movies, most travelers do. Films like, “Out of Africa” and “Before Sunrise” were inspiring my wanderlust long before Walter Kim wrote the book that would become the Clooney-driven film, “Up in the Air”.

But it was Clooney’s Ryan Bingham character that was the first in a travel movie I identified with so much it shook me up a bit. Eerily, I have also experienced the same relationship drama Bingham’s character endures. What I love most about the movie “Up in the Air” though, is the feeling of bliss it so perfectly captures that I have every. single. time. I. fly. in. a. plane.

I truly get a high from looking down, and looking out. So every time I fly, I add a few more images to my “Up In The Air” collection.

FriFotos: Countryside

This week’s FriFotos theme is “Countryside” and as with most themes chosen, this may mean different things to different people. The first thing that comes to mind for me is a place without cell phone reception, without strip malls, where miles pass between homes.

While Big Sur, California is not inland it is a place that immediately comes to mind when I think of being in the country. When you’re in Big Sur at night, the stars feel so close it causes a sort of claustrophobia. The good kind. There is definitely no cell phone reception. It does have wild, natural beauty – in abundance. This is another qualification I think of when the word countryside is tossed around. It’s a must for me and can be subtle or dramatic.

This week, for FriFotos, I present to you: Big Sur, California. It’s all about the dramatic and wild in this part of Northern California. If you haven’t yet been, I highly recommend visiting. Soon.

Tastes Better with Friends

I have the tendency to really be an introvert who fiercely protects her alone time. I’ve been on twitter since 2008 but only in the last 9 months has twitter jumped off the screen and started to be a part of my face-to-face life in a prominent way, pushing me out of my solo comfort zone to develop relationships with like-minded people that I actually see and travel with. Some of the people I would consider to be my best friends now, I met via twitter. Is it the new match.com as some have joked? No. However, it has led to many “tweetups” that have enriched my life and led to some amazing experiences I might not have otherwise had. The 12 state road trip that I completed in October with Spencer Spellman would likely not have happened without my having met Spencer on twitter. I could tell a dozen other stories similar to that.
